We are leaving in just over 2 weeks for Jordan and Egypt and our vaccinations are current for Hep A and B, Pneumonia, Polio and we updated our Tetanus that included Diphtheria and Whooping Cough and updated our Typhoid vaccination. We also had H1N1 (swine flu) injection.

No injections and no mosquitoes when we went.

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

WE leave in two days time and we only needed the TwinRex shots (Hep A and Hep B). Hubby also had the Swine flu shot. Our doc said that this was plenty for us as we are not going away from the "tourist" areas and therfor malaria was a low risk disease for us.
I would, however, listen to your own doctor's advice as they know you best.

I am taking a bottle of mozzie repellant that contains DEET as this is supposedly the best thing to repel insects.
Hope you enjoy!!

Unfortunately my wife suffered a head injury while we were in Cairo and was rushed to hospital by ambulance and into the theatre for urgent attention.

The one question we were asked over and over again by First Aid attendant, doctors and the surgeon was whether or not her Tetanus injections were up to date and all expressed relief when we told them yes.

Now no one expects to have an accident and suffer injuries but you never know and the clear message that came from this experience was that up-to-date tetanus injections are a must.

Working in the health industry I know just how expensive it can be if you are ill in another country so be prepared before you go. Make sure that your Hep injections are up to date, typhoid and tetanus and do get the swine flu injection - pays to be safe and protected. I never had any problems with mozzies in Egypt but just take a roll on repellent with DEET in it. Just having come back from overseas most countries have check points for you to fill out health cards on entering or leaving and believe me people are very paranoid in the planes and at airports about anyone who is coughing or having a sniffle.

Yeah. It really sucks having allergies. The dust on the planes always give me sniffles. LOL

One other thing to double check is the travel insurance. On my last tour, someone related a story of one man who contracted H1N1 and was denied coverage of his early flight home because his travel insurance didn't cover anything related to "pandemics."

I double checked my coverage through the Royal Bank and they confirmed that they will cover all costs as long as there isn't a travel advisory in place (before I leave. They would cover if one was issued while I was there and had to return home).

So double check. Even if you get the shot (excellent idea, of course) a lot of other things related to H1N1 could shorten a trip...like everyone else on the bus getting sick.

I really think the tour companies would be wise to require H1N1 vaccinations for all travelers.

Smiler
