The Hungarian pancake is similar to a French crepe. The Gundel speciality ( but served elsewhere too) has a creamy walnut filling and a rich chocolate sauce.

That sounds delicious.
That also sounds similiar to a Russian Blini as well, although they have savoury as well as sweet. Mmmm.....not that I am a very sweet person at all! Lol.

I havent had a 'real' Hungarian pancake .. last time in Budapest we were on our own rather than a tour. We ate at a couple of lovely restaurants but I dont think I ate pancakes. Did eat goose liver though and it was beautifully prepared! Does the tour stop at a restaurant as a dinner together and pancakes are the dessert? Will we all have one if and when we venture together on the Member's Tour?

Edit: It's a few hours after this post and I have been out to dinner and had a Gundel in honour of you and because it was on the menu! How weird to be there after this post!
Except it was hazelnuts instead of walnuts and with hazelnut ice cream and the chocolate sauce. A bit like Nutella! Had goulash too, so very Eastern European night.

2004 was when we were there on our Highlights of Eastern Europe tour so no doubt some of the itinerary has changed.
