Does anyone know whether the Euro can be used in any of the countries that the tour visits, or do we buy local currency at the borders?

Hi Pauline, pleased to note that you are signed up to go on this trip.

We have made visits in recent years to most of the countries involved, albeit not to many of the actual tour destinations. Our experience, even in the smaller coastal towns, is that most people will accept euros but prefer notes to coins. We tend to carry 5, 10 & 20 euro notes and a film cassette tube full of 1 x euro coins. We also carry about 40 x $US1 bills as these can be used for toilet stops or tips to guides etc if all else fails.

We will not be carrying any of the local stuff but other BBers may have a different point of view.

It seems that most of the countries to be visited during the 2010 tour have their own, unique currency although as time goes by, some of them may well change to the Euro.

According to the website, Currencies of the World, here are the currencies of the countries to be visited during the 2010 BB tour:
Given that the itinerary involves short stays in all of the places to be visited (maximum 2 nights), Hornet's suggested approach (based on his recent experiences) would seem to be a very sensible approach.

Hornet, I'm looking forward to the tour.
Looks like I'll be taking euros and glad to read that they are accepted at most places.

Phil, thanks for the links to the varies countries and their currencies.

jimbo, I'm sure you are correct. We now have about a 9 or 10 month wait to find out who our TD will be. Razzer
Looking forward to meeting you & Therese.

Us too Pauline.

My very best advice would be to tell you not to spend any money of course. Should be ok, we have visited Croatia, Monte Negro, Bulgaria, Romania and several Greek outposts during the past 12 months so I think I have got it about right.

See you in September then.

Pauline, just to confirm what has already been said, I noticed the following in the notes for the Bohemian which we are taking prior to the Presidents tour:

Please note - in many parts of Eastern Europe, small denomination USD bills and Euros are useful to have when converting into local currencies.

Hope you don't mind another "burning" question here rather than starting a new thread. Not so sure this should even be a ?, but best to satisfy my worrisome nature. I believe it was John who said in one of the threads that the 16th was the day the tour starts in Bucharest. Is that the same as Day 1 Arrive in Bucharest that is the itinerary? I could assume so, but you know how that goes and I do plan on arriving a day early. TYVM

Happy Trails!!
