The problem of getting images off memory cards seems to be a universal one. Perhaps Insight could consider providing a facility on-board their buses. I believe you can buy a portable CD burner designed to take all memory cards for something like US$600. This would solve the problem, all that passengers would need to do is to bring along some blank CDs. Smiler

Actually, I recently bought a portable CD burner for US$298. I think that is something personal and I really don't think that it is Insight's responsibility to provide such equipment. If someone chooses to take lots of pictures with their digital camera, it is totally their responsibility to decide how they want to store it, it is not Insight.

Paul and Del you can get CD burners in Aus for just over $400 AUD and portable hard drives are a bit cheaper. I am just deciding which one I really want at the moment. Leaning towards the memory driver because they are lighter and you don't have to carry CDs around, but then if something happens to your hard drive, you have lost all your pics. Difficult decision really.

At this point, my strategy is to borrow CF cards from friends for my 17 day vacation this September, and to purchase a 512MB card on eBay to accumulate about 1000MB of storage on four cards. (Prices on eBay are about half the retail price in stores here in Canada). I'll then attempt to resell the 512MB card on eBay to recover some of my cost on my return. As well, I'm packing some blank CD's and a card reader in the (apparently faint) hope of finding either a PC with a CD burner or someone on the bus with a portable device.

I don't know if eBay is a viable option for folks in Australia...

Hi, I'm with you doubleu. I'm buying a 512Mb card and along with a 128Mb hope that I can find places to burn CD's.
Also: Where can I purchase a portable CD burner for A$400? Thanks.

Paul and Del...I am NOT putting much hope in finding a way to burn card images to a CD, based on this statement from Chris in another thread:

Your chances of finding a PC with a CD-writer at any hotel are so vanishingly small as to be insignificant, in my experience.

I honestly do think you're "pushing your luck" in expecting to be able to find facilities for writing memory cards to a CD while you're away on your tour.

That said, in other threads, posters have claimed to have had no problem finding photo shops who will burn a CD for 8 or 9 Euros...however, none were in Italy where I'm going.

Paul and Del,
You can buy a CP 200 Combo Apacer CD writer - DVD player for $AU368.50 from www.eyo.com.au it burns CDs, plays DVDs, you can see your pics on a TV etc. It weighs about 700 grams so is heavier than the portable hard drives

this is the direct link to the product above ... I'm thinking of getting one. This is a really good price, some places are charging more even for the model before this one.

there are others around $400, but this one seems to be a popular one

Auselle...that looks like an excellent unit at an excellent price (even converted to Cdn dollars). Unfortunately, unavailable in Canada.

However, you might wish to confirm its capacity (i.e. how many GB it can store), and whether that is included in the price shown. I couldn't find any info on this anywhere. Similar units in Canada often have great prices but come with zero storage, meaning extra cost to purchase and install a hard drive.

Chris...If I knew someone on my tour had one of these, I'd not only happily pay for the transfers, but I'd supply the Cd's. I think most digital camera users would as well.
