Thank you all for your comments. From the advice here and elsewahere (and also because our current point and shoot digital is a Cannon) I went with the Canon EOS 400D. I also opted for the Canon EF-S 17-85mm, particularly for the low light situations. We leave in 4 weeks which I know doesn't give me enough time to learn to use the camera properly, but we all have to start somewhere. I plan to use the auto settings when I am in too much of a hurry to figure out the other settings. I have had an SLR before, but it was quite a few years ago. I also know using the auto settings pretty much defeats the purpose of having an SLR but I figure for this one trip I can use both, thus giving me a better chance of getting some good shots and still learn more about the camera as I go.
Thanks again! |

Dell,
I have the Canon Rebel XT with the kit lens EF-S-18-55. I also have the 75-300 which I use for bird pictures. I LOVE this camera, this is my first SLR and have taken some really great pictures. I have even been encouraged to submit some to a contest, and I know it is because it is a great fool proof camera. I am not taking the larger lens with me on my trip next week because of the weight and the chance of getting lint etc. in my camera. Using the auto settings will guarantee you great pictures and it is really not a cop out!! I also took a class on using the camera and it helped to understand all the manual settings. |

The new Canon Xsi 450D is awesome! Comes with an 18-55 kit lens that is decent. It is light weight for a DSLR, and the crop factor is 1.6 (makes an 18mm lens equivilent to about 28mm), which is fairly wide when you need wide shots. If you want to go wider, there are a number of lenses out there, including the canon 10-22.
