I travel regularly and have up until last year been content with my trusty old Nikon F50 (with tamron 28-200 lens or Nikon 70-300 lens). Earlier this year I bought a Canon PowerShot A640 which I'm very pleased with. I do scan prints from my SLR for posting etc. but I don't think the final digital quality is as good as those from the Powershot. My wife and I will be doing the Country Roads of B, S & A shortly and I'm in a dilemma. Should I just go with the Powershot, take the two cameras or do as someone said recently - invest in a new Nikon digital body for use with my lens. Any advice???

Excuse me for butting in here but maybe one of you could help with a dummies camera question.

Could you please explain in simple words the meaning of SLR and isn't there another term ? for the other sort?

We don't own a 'modern' camera but borrow our son's so have not actually had the opportunity to learn such things. We are still in the 'point and shot' phase of photography = 10% good shots and 50% OK and 40% duds Big Grin but we take 'a lot' so the percentage works out OK Wink

I had tried a couple of times to find this info on the web written in 'simple terms' but failed, obviously not typing in the correct wording.

Thanks guys Big Grin

Simple terms....

SLR means you can change lenses on the camera.

These cameras tend to be heavier than "point and shoot" units. Serious SLR photographers will also be carrying their lenses, filters and (possibly) tripods.

There are some excellent cameras that are a good compromise for people who prefer more control over their photographs and want to adjust the settings themselves. At the same time, these cameras provide the option of putting the camera on "automatic" allowing the camera to do all the thinking.
