Hi:

Just a quick suggestion for those looking for ways to store pictures while on a long trip.

We returned the end of September from the 26 day Britain and Ireland Discovery. I took along my 60GB iPod and downloaded the pictures from my digital cameral onto it each night (had over 2000 pictures in total). When I returned home I downloaded all my pictures onto my computer.

After I had the pictures edited and organized - I have four albums - one of each country, I have reloaded the edited albums of pictures back onto the iPod. I can now, by using the iPod, show the pictures on my TV as slideshows along with selected appropriate music.

That sounds a fairly efficient way to store the photographic data. What's the connection lead like? Is it USB? or is it a special one would need to get in advance?

Yes, you would have to get a connector for the iPod that would allows you to plug in the camera cord to the iPod as you would normally do into the computer. It is quite small and is available any place Apple products are sold, i.e. stores or internet. You would also need to take along a power connection for the iPod so you could charge the battery, also something that is available at the Apple store.

By the way, we LOVED Ireland!!! Hope to make a return trip sometime, and stay awhile.

Best regards,
GJ

Hi GJ,

This is one of the better solutions that I have read regarding photo storage. Cost per Giga Byte is probably cheaper than purchasing numerous memory cards. I shoot with Canon EOS 20D and a 2GB card. I'm going to do the comparison iPod v's Memory Cards...whilst memory has become cheaper I still feel the iPod will win out...plus you can have your favourite music along with you at the same time.

Thanks also for your kind words about Ireland...My wife and I did the Canadian Rockies & Alaska Cruise in 2005 and we were blown away by the spectacular scenery...WOW

Happy Holidays in 2007

I tried this solution with my iPod and was disappointed to discover that it didn't work.

Although I don't own an iPod Photo, I was told by Apple that I could buy something that would allow the transfer between my camera and my 20 GB iPod. Unfortunately, the connector did not work with my camera so I had no choice but to buy more memory cards.

It was very frustrating because I purchased the iPod shortly before the photo version came out!

In any case, I think it's a fantastic option ... if it works with your camera. Wink

Sorry this process didn't work for you, Morgana. I should have mentioned that I had the Photo iPod 60GB. My camera is a digital Panasonic, which although wasn't listed as being compatible with the iPod connecter, did work just fine.

Lots of things to check out, but as I indicated in my previous message, I was very pleased with how it handled my 'over 2000' pictures on a very long trip. Also I might mention that I take very large pictures so that I can crop them, etc. when I get home, so consequently they are very large files.

Best regards,
GJ

That sort of thing certainly can be frustrating can't it Morgana. I was given my 40GB iPod, as a gift, a couple of months before the photo version was released. Frowner
