Is it safe for your digital camera to go through the hand luggage x-ray machine, or should I buy one of those special bags.
Also can you buy lithium batteries overseas, or should I stock up before I go.

It is safe for your digital camera to go through the x-ray machine at the airport.

As for extra lithium batteries, put them in your carry-on bag, not in your checked airline bag.

Buy any extra batteries at home, not in Europe. In Europe (overseas?) you will pay much more.

Besides do you really want to spend your precious vacation time in hunting for an electronics store and hoping that they have the batteries compatible with your camera?

Hi Allison. Yes it is safe for your camera. Just make sure you take 2 batteries from Oz, and of course your camera recharger and the appropriate power socket adaptor. Also take with you a couple of reasonable sized memory cards, ie at least 1GB - but check what your camera is capable of handling. For eg example all my friends said buy 2 GB SD cards for my Nikon 7 mega pixel camera, but my particular camera can only handle up to a max of 1 GB memory cards - so read your, manual. PS on prices - do your homework, duty free is not always the cheapest, the current June mid-year sales can be cheaper.

Unless you want booze or cig's, (the only 2 things that are cheap) I would steer clear of the Duty Free shops.... they are just a rip-off Mad

At least in a retail store you can bargin for an item, no show in Duty Free!!!

Allison,
You're better off to buy the camera, batteries, extended warranty etc. here for your best price then claim the TRS (Tax Refund Scheme) when you depart the country, via the airport.

You can purchase max 30 days before departure so you have time to play with and learn the camera functions. Just make sure you get a Tax Invoice from the shop you buy from (JB Hifi, Bing Lee etc.) You will need to produce the invoice to make your claim and get the GST refunded.

I did it when I went to Phuket last year.

Hope this helps.
