Wife and I about to take the Romantic European tour (23days), and looking at getting a video camera, and want to purchase enough tape for the trip. I am comfortable with a digital camera (Canon Powershot S500), and have an SLR (Minolta Dynax - still kicking 18 years later
 ), and we will probabyl take both of these as well, but I am pretty new to using a camcorder.Any estimates on how much film we will need? |

That can of course vary greatly with the individual however I can say that I probably recorded around 4 hours of video on the Romantic European trip that we did in 2001. |

I started taking videos' four tours ago and the first was 1hr 20min, Insights "Country Roads of Ireland", 13 days, and I think I am the only one who has ever seen the entire video despite a valiant effort by my daughter. Even my wife doesn't make it all the way thru and she views them to proof the titleing of her still shots. Each tour I have progressively brcome more selective and the last tour, Grand Tour of Egypt, 18 days, I was able to capture in 39 minutes and my wife did see it all. She is now going to use it in a presentation to her church group.

Hi Token User.We have just returned From an Insight tour of Spain, Portugal and Morocco,a further tour of Northern Spain and 4 days in Bangkok on the way home(6 weeks away).In all I took nearly ten(10) hours of video and my wife about 2500 digital photos.The problem now is going through it all but it will be a very pleasurably experience reliving all the memories.
As Dragon mentioned it is an individual thing. Maybe we could have been a little more selective but hey you may never go back and its better to have to much than not enough!! By the way each tape recorded an hour. Have a great trip. Jim |

I don't want to see my trip through the viewfinder of a camcorder - but that was about what I was expecting ... possibly 1-2 hours per day. It sounds like a lot, but will edit down nicely - and give us some lasting memories as well. From previous trips, I wish we had commentary from some of the walking tours we did - something to embellish the photos we took and to set the scene.
We have photos from previous trips that my wife has carefully arranged in photo albums. This time round, we will be pretty much all digital - and taken at 5MP for potential blowups later, and placement on our web pages for family back home to access. I need a vacation, and provided Insight doesn't cancel this one as well, I am really looking forward to it ... |

We took the Northern capitols & Russia trip that was 19 days. My husband took 9 hours of video. He put them on 9 different dvd's and that way we can watch what we want without not having to look at them all. I think he put each country on a different dvd. It really worked out good. I took 450 pictures and am now going through them and putting text on where they are. What a job, but you forget where they were taken if you don't. This is the most pictures and video's we have taken but figured we wouldn't go back there. I took a lot from the bus of the country side and they turned out real good. It's nice watching them as it sure brings back memories of a wonderful trip.

On our recent tours of Jordan and Egypt, 25 days in all, I took about four hours of video – anything important I always take twice.
That ended up as two 20 minute and one 30 minute video, the last longer that I would normally wish. So, in all about 75% of it ended up “on the cutting room floor.” This is the huge advantage of video over film; film was so expensive that you felt you had to use everything you took. I firmly believe that if you expect people to watch you home videos you have to keep them short and be ruthless with editing. It is different, of course, if you are just producing for yourselves. The first thing I do is to burn all the raw video clips to a DVD, so I do still have access to the original footage. When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable. |

Hi, we did the Romantic Euro tour in June this year and I used 14 x 60 minute MiniDV tapes for a Panasonic NVGS300 digital video camera. I'm so glad I recorded 14 hrs worth because it now brings back fab memories of all that we saw. You see so much on this tour that in the end you may struggle to recall some of it and having it on tape as a reminder was excellent. We also captured 2.5GB worth of digital photos. We began the tour with 10 tapes but by the time we got to Budapest we realised we would run out. Budapest was a great place to pick up tapes cheaply from the West End Shopping Complex attached to the Hilton West End Hotel.

when I went on the European Spotlight tour a couple of years ago, I took a video camera along, and videoed 5 tapes with the Panosonic .... I was the only one who did, and the others where asking me to send them copies, as they where envious I got the sounds on record.

We have just returned from Country Roads of Italy. My husband took an hour tape for each day and used them all. Places like the Amalfi coast are great with a still camera but absolutely spectacular taken on video. It is also great to get some audio from your Tour Director's comments as well.It is important to tape and then put the camera away for a while so that you do enjoy your holiday. But once you get home, the videos are magnificent !
