Hi Patrick and all:
Have been following the messages on the photo tips site, and have just acquired a Video iPod to take on our tour (26 day Britain and Ireland Discovery Tour - September 2006) and have been 'practicing' downloading pictures from my camera to the iPod using your suggested iPot camera connector. It seems to work wonderfully well, and have no trouble to then download the pictues from the iPod to the computer for editing etc. My camera is a Panasonic Digital 4.0 and while it wasn't listed as 'compatible' with the iPod camera connector, works perfectly. Now I just have to get a power adapter - I know there is an Apple one available for the iPod but wondered if any converter we take for other items such as a hair dryer etc. would work ok. Really appreciate all the helpful info on the BB and hope this will assist others looking for alternative storage sources while on a long trip. Best regards, GJ This message has been edited. Hello, you had a question about storage devices.
I bought a digimate hard disk store, it accepts most types of memory cards, I have 1gb memory in my camera and i only used it up twice on our holiday, simply remove memory put it in the device and in a couple of minutes it uploaded, I then blanked the memory and off we go,my camera used 100mb per minute when taking video and probably 2-3mb for a photo, I have a canon ixus 7megapixel camera, it takes surprisingly good video for a still camera, I took some really nice video from the rialto bridge in venice and on the water taxi for example,it adds an extra dimension to the still pictures, I used 15gb of space on our 3 weeks away, hope this gives you a guide. p.s. the digimate doesn't have a screen to see photo's I paid $170 Ipod photo is the go if you want this + you can take music with you. hope this helps. David Boag.Melbourne try internet search for Digimate. |

We lashed out and purchased a Vosonic VP8360. It has 80gig of space, does MP3, RAW etc, but for us the best two features were the accessory pack (came with a hard case, a cradle and all the chargers you would ever need) and the fact it would read XP cards without an adaptor (we run Fuji cameras) its later life will be for picture shows, as it can be plugged in to TVs, laptops etc. It does slideshows with a background music track if you want to!!
We intend to load some home snaps before we go, in case anyone is interested in where we come from. At less than 250gm its a pretty tight package for all it does )Tho' I know I won't convert any iPod fanatics) Cheers, Sue |

Have to add my two cents. I own an Image Tank. This is the "Army Jeep" equivalent of digital storage, with a large number of satisfied users who have trekked all over the world with these. The price is right -- only $150 for a 40gb hard drive, and this includes a battery pack. You can buy these at insidecomputer.com

Hi Sue. I have also considered buying the Volsonic. Where did you purchase it and what did you pay?

Hi Tom99
I took your advice and followed the link on your post. I'm impressed and the technology of the Image Tank appears to be fairly priced representing good value for money...Decision time now! |

I've mentioned the 'TANK' to some colleagues...keen photographers... whislt they like it, there seems to be a growing body of opinion regarding and in favour of the iPod Nano. There is a school of thought amongst them that seems to indicate that they think the solid state Nano is better than the plain iPod with the hard disk which has moving parts. However the plain iPod wins hands down in terms of capacity. Reliability problems may be fewer with the solid state memory. I'm just putting this out there just in case those interested are about to make a purchasing decision for this type of technology/storage. Seek further advice if unsure.
