Has anyone linked their digital photos to GPS and then plotted them to Google Earth? I want to do this on our Grand Tour of Egypt in the fall and am looking for options on how to best make this happen. I fear that one pile of rocks might tend to resemble another and this might be helpful for later viewing or even a return trip. Thanks!

Plant Lady,

I am interested in the concept and saw a device called a Photo Finder. See the following link for one example. http://photofinder.atpinc.com/

We've been discussing this on the Trafalgar Tours bulletin board. I'm definitely checking into this because I travel on my own and don't have a travel partner to ask, "Where were we when I took this shot?" when I get home.

Thank you for the link! I have a Magellan explorist 500LE and will need to buy more maps as well as software if I take it along. The photofinder is intriguing. It does say to back up photo files before inserting the SD card. We carry a Wolverine for that task, anyway. I did find two or three gadgets similar to the photofinder, so be sure to do your research. I am having trouble using my GPS with Windows Vista. I have found that this is not uncommon with Vista so it is a matter of deciding how much trouble I want. I wonder if anyone out there has tried the photofinder....

Zelda Sue -

I have been busy researching since my last post and have made a purchase. I have figured out how to link my Magellan gps to my photos, but now plan to leave it at home as it has some issues, adds extra weight and is not very dependable (eats batteries like crazy). I ordered a GiSTEQ Phototrackr Lite to bring to Egypt in the fall. In the meantime, it will be going with us on short trips around the US to be sure that it can do as desired. I selected this geo-tracking device because it only requires one battery, so I can pack a recharger. It also turns itself off and has a motion detector to reactivate. The ATP model makes me nervous as I will not carry a laptop to back-up photos prior to inserting the card into that device. We lost some digital photos on a trip to Belgium and it tends to be a concern. Have you decided upon anything?

My Phototrackr Light arrived in time for a test run this past weekend. It took a bit of effort to download and install updates to the software, but it was worth every minute. We drove to a wedding that was about 50 miles from our home and I shot odd photos en route with the Phototrackr hooked onto my camera bag. Once back home, it was a cinch to have the computer match our track with the individual photos. When traveling further from home, I plan to bring rechargable AA batteries for this little gizmo. After struggling with my Magellan GPS and various software to link photos with locations, I do not see any reason to go to that much work now that I have this fun little gadget. It is effortless!

PlantLady,

Congratulations on embracing the technology and making it work for you. Just when I thought I'd bought enough gadgets for now you had to go and post positive feedback! Wink From which supplier did you order it?

I did a web search and bought it from Adorama for $89. I have also posted a review of the gadget on epinions.com. I have used it on two trips now and just about have it figured out. I think that you need to name your route before importing the photos and route to make things go more quickly with the geocoding. I just cannot get over how fun and easy it is. It will be terrific to use it with our Greece and Egypt trip. I can hardly wait!
