Sandry-Thanks for your post. I leave for my European Heritage Tour in 3 sleeps WinkTour starts on July 6th. We had planned on doing the illuminations optional in Paris also but will obviously have to choose something else after reading your comments.

We are staying in Paris an extra day to go to Versailles. Do we need to make tour plans ahead or when we get to Paris? Will the hotel help us find a tour to go there?

I'm sure the hotel will but it also easy to do it by yourselves and hire audio guides.

We're going by ourselves. You can prebuy your ticket on the Versailles website and this includes an audioguide. You don't have to line up in the main line.
All you have to do to get there is catch RER C From Invalides.. or any other station on the line.. to Gare de Versailles/Rive Gauche. 31 minutes trip.
It worked out to be much cheaper than a tour and a gives you a lot more time there.
There are lots of operators that run tours.. just google them.I like to have has much prebooked and paid for before I go. Less to worry about.

I like to have an idea as to what I am going to do when but I also like to be flexible in case the weather doesn't co-operate and I can swap an indoor excursion for an outdoor one.

We're going to stay in Paris for an extra 3 days instead of going back to London. We've booked what I think will be a great tour with Fat Bike Tours to Versailles, only about 10 km riding as they take you on the RER train to Versailles, then you visit market to get wine, lunch supplies, ride around the gardens of the palace, do a tour through the palace. It's a day trip, but well worth it I think for approx A$120.
