Was't Cinque Terre previously included in this tour? We were planning on doing this trip--primarily because it was the only Insight trip that stopped in these beautiful hilltop villages. We are very sad to see the changes. Does anyone know the details and if Cinque Terre will be included in future trips?

You are correct. According to the 2008 brochure, days 3 and 4 of the Italian Elegance tour were:
quote:
DAY 3 – SUN – ROME – LA SPEZIA. Take the autostrada northwards through Tuscany, home of the famous Chianti wines, to medieval Siena, where you can explore narrow cobbled streets lined with palaces and patrician mansions, and the famous Campo Square. Twice a year, the Palio horse race takes place here to the accompaniment of great festivities. Continue to Pisa to see the famous Leaning Tower in the 'Meadow of Miracles', and the 11th century Cathedral and Baptistery. Follow the Mediterranean coast past the marble quarries of Carrara to your hotel in La Spezia on the eastern end of the Italian Riviera. Hotel: Jolly. (BB,D)

DAY 4 – MON – LA SPEZIA – FLORENCE. Explore the Cinque Terre, or ‘five villages’, which were for years only accessible by donkey. Luckily, today you can take the train! A local expert will guide you around two of the villages, which both retain their charm and reputation for producing one of Italy’s most sought after and exclusive wines. Later, head to Florence, city of treasures and cradle of the Renaissance, for your two night stay. Hotel: Villa Gabriele D’Annunzio. (BB,D)

Whereas, in the 2009 brochure, days 3 and 4 of the Italian Elegance tour are now:
quote:
DAY 3 – SUN – ROME – TUSCANY. Take the autostrada north to medieval Siena, where you can explore narrow cobbled streets lined with palaces and patrician mansions. Twice a year, in the famous Campo Square, the Palio horse race takes place to the accompaniment of great festivities. After some time to explore, continue to your elegant Tuscan villa near the walled town of Monteriggione. Having spent two days in the bustling metropolis of Rome, your villa is a welcome retreat. The meticulously manicured grounds, friendly staff and terrific food are out of this world. Relax by the pool, take in the tranquil surroundings, this is Tuscany at its best. Hotel: Borgo San Luigi. (BB,D)

DAY 4 – MON – CHIANTI EXCURSION. Drive to the delightful hill-top town of San Gimignano, nicknamed 'Tuscany's Medieval Manhattan' due to the towers which dominate the skyline. See the Piazza del Duomo and Palazzo del Popolo before some free time to stroll the cobbled streets and perhaps enjoy some lunch or shopping. Get your cameras ready now for a drive through the beautiful rolling countryside of Tuscany, the epitome of picture postcard Italy. Pass olive groves, old farmhouses, medieval towns and, of course, the famous Chianti vineyards on your way to taste some of the most famous products of Tuscany at a local winery. Later, return to the delightful setting of your Tuscan villa. (BB)

Suggest you use the "Contact us" link at the foot of this webpage to ask Insight whether future versions of this tour might include Cinque Terre.

Q: Why do you want to travel to Italy just to see Cinque Terre on a tour?

The Insight 13-day Italian Elegance 2009 tour does not include it as you mentioned. Last year they did. Why did they drop it one may ask?

They did and it is not a part of the tour, so why not go on Insight's better 14-day "Italian Escapade tour"? Sorrento and Assisi make Cinque Terre look mild in my opinion. Have you been to Capri?

Cat's,

I believe that you are overlooking the intent of Insight's "Elegance" range of tours. They are somewhat more up-market than the rest of their tour range and seem to be intended for those who have already taken an introductory tour of a country via, for example, a tour like the Italian Escapade.

The Italian Elegance tour now includes three nights in a Tuscan villa (Borgo San Luigi) with included visits to San Gimignano, Monteriggione plus a wine tasting at a local vineyard, rather than the nights in La Spezia with the visit to two towns of the Cinque Terre.

Introductory tours like the Italian Escapade provide a "microscopic" experience of the Umbria region with a visit to Assisi and a similar depth of experience of the Campagnia region with the time in Sorrento, etc.

Have a look a my suggested BB tour itinerary, Enchanting Italy, to see how you could explore these places in much greater depth.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the comments to my inquiry. We were thinking of this tour because of the stop in Cinque Terre--this is not meaning we do not see the draw of other Italy locations. I have been to Italy two times and have been to Rome, Sorrento, Capri, Assisi, Florence, and Venice. I also have been to the Italian Alps on a trip to Germany and Switzerland. Because of these trips, I was not looking at the Italian Escapade as there is not much different from where I have already been. Perhaps I will choose for us to go on the Country Roads trip--does anyone have any comments about that trip?

There are so many places in Europe that I want to visit. Perhaps I will win the lottery tonight and then I can book a few trips! I have been traveling to Europe for almost 45 years, but only for the last twenty years I have been able to go to other countries other than Germany.

One suggestion would be to take the new version of the Italian Elegance tour and add two nights in Milan after the tour. There are several companies offering day tours to Cinque Terre from Milan or you could make your own way there by train.

"... They are somewhat more up-market than the rest of their tour range and ...."

Q: Does "up-market" mean the other Insight tours are NOT as good, or they get a free "wine tasting" ,or that one pays a bit more per day? Roll Eyes

I think you prefer the one tour, so I will let it stay as both of us have our opinions.

Cat's,

you pay more for this 12 day tour than you do for the 13 day Escapades tour and the accommodation is possibly a little better. It doesn't seem to be intended for someone making their first visit to Italy (which is how I see the Escapades tour) but seems to be offering things which will attract a visitor back to Italy for another tour.

By the way, this tour is not of interest to me. I've been to Italy three times and if I go back, it will be for a much slower, more detailed tour of several regions or even a long stay in a villa, driving myself where I want to go.
