we are travelling on the 4 day gems of britain tour in June 2007 - we are very keen to see the Cotswalds - will this tour do it justice or should we book an extra tour to the Cotswalds when we return to london?

Hi Maggs,

We did the Highlights of Britain last year, the tour "drove" through the Cotswolds which is what the Gems of Britain is doing. Evans Evans have two all day trips to the Cotswolds from London, they go to villages where you would be able to have a really good look at the area. The drive through is nice, but you don't see the real Cotswolds.
Merry Christmas.

A few years back 2 of us rented a car for a week and stayed in B and B's in the Cotswolds. If you have the time this is a terrific way to see so much and meet "real people" who live there

Yes I also agree its better to see this area in your own pace as there are so many villages to be seen.Tours by Coach only show you very little of area.Rent a car and see it 4 yourself.

"Rent a car and see 4 yourself" For most of the year in Britain this should read " Rent a car and see miles and miles of hedgerows for yourself, whilst trying to avoid other traffic and with your partners face buried in a map" The different perspective from an elevated viewing position on a coach is dramatically better, and should be emphasised far more than it is.

In general, I agree with Paul. In fact I have previously posted an extract from my 1999 diary, our first coach tour, which read “Immediately one of the advantages of this type of touring becomes apparent. From our elevated seats we can look out over the Kent countryside whilst those in cars will see nothing but hedgerows.”

However, we have also spent around six weeks touring the United Kingdom in a self drive car, enjoyed it immensely and had no problems at all navigating. Like most aspects of travelling, navigating benefits from homework and preparation which in our case meant writing out route instructions the night before.

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

When we were younger, we rented a car and stayed at B&Bs in England, Scotland, and Wales. We are taking a Gems tour June 6. The Cotswolds B&B are still our favorites. Now we take guided tours but would suggest renting a car and driving if you feel up to it. It takes a driver & a navigator. On round-abouts, move to the inside and go around until you find the exit you want.

Sat Nav systems have made navigation a "non problem". They are sufficiently cheap, now, that it's worth buying one if you are thinking of renting a car and, if you already have one in the US, most of them will allow you to buy and install UK maps if you plan to visit Britain.
