My Mom and I are planning a trip next Sept/Oct. and we are still up in the air on which tour to take!
This will be our first trip to Europe and we thought we had decided on Britain/Ireland, but we also think seeing the passion play in Oberammergau would be amazing!
So anyone who has been on the Britain/Ireland Explorer, did you feel you had enough down time to go on your own and did it cover enough?
Has anyone seen the passion play and how was that experience?
I really appreciate any and all feedback, we need to decide quickly on what we are going to do!
Thanks! Smiler

We saw the Passion Play many years ago [1984 - not with Insight]. Frankly, we found it overwhelming. It lasts 6 hours with a lunch break. Hubby did not come back after lunch.

I was worried about it being overwhelming and the surrounding areas being so crowded. Part of the reason we were looking at Sept/Oct. is to avoid the summer crowds!

We were there in August and there were crowds, all right!

I just got back from the Explorer on Saturday and there was plenty of free time. A lot more so than when we did the European trip!
It's quite a laid back and relaxed trip in comparison. I did all the optionals and still had many half days on my own. There were no real crowds except for in Edinburgh, because the international arts festival was on.. as well as the tattoo. The town was buzzing and by far my favourite. The Tattoo was a highlight. If you haven't seen it, it's worth picking a date that has it included. Those tours are pretty much guaranteed to go ahead too. They fill up faster than the other ones. If I had more time, I'd like to have done the trip that included Northern Ireland though.

Hi Laj, we are heading off shortly for the Romantic European, so loved reading your blog about your trip and all the lovely food descriptions (hope our TD Ruth Ridgeway is able to offer the Budapest Optional of Cruise and Dinner, it sounded fabulous). Did you get any more nomination links for your latest trip? I've got the oz flag here, and intend to get the rest at Gold Corner, Florence. 11 sleeps to go and we're off on Med. Dreams then R.E. Are you going to post a blog on your latest trip?

You're going to have a great time!
Yes.. I pre bought my links this this time and wore them through the countries.
I've started typing up my blog. The tour was only the 'bit in the middle' for me this time, so you may have to skip bits. Will post when it's ready.Smiler

Hi Laj, look forward to your blog, they are always so good to read, if not posted before 25 Sept, I'll read when we get back end October. I was going to pre-order from Gillerts online but they had a lot of them on backorder so will just get the VAT back on them at Charles De Gaulle a/port. Cheers for now. Smiler

Laj,

Thank you so much for the info, it's great hearing from someone who took the tour!
I'm relieved to hear about the free time, it's one of the things we were concerned about.
What did you think of the hotels involved? You took all of the optionals, is there any you didn't enjoy as much? I wish we were going during the Military Tattoo, but we can't go during that time, it looks amazing!
Anxious to read your blog!
Thanks!

The hotels were lovely and the meals fantastic. The hotel in the highlands is more a character hotel rather than a fancier one.. as you'd except. It's just a small village. You'll eat lots of soup and roast. Smiler
I'm not a good one for giving advice on optionals. I always do all of them. I enjoy the company. The Irish cabaret was good. The Welsh banquet great. The only one that was no good was the cruise on Lake Windmere and that was purely because of the weather. Couldn't see a thing for rain. Couldn't predict that.
I found the free time enough, but like all of these tours.. you could stay on in these towns and cities for much longer. 2 hours in Bath does not do it justice. But it gives you a taste. My list of places to go back and spend more time is just growing and growing.
