Can anyone tell me if the regulation size suitcase I carry on the plane will fit on the bus. Usually bus overheads are smaller than the plane. If so will they put it underneath?

Dear CML
Your suitcase will be packed in the luggage compartments under the bus. If you mean a cabin bag they won't fit in the overhead racks. What we were told to do by our tour guide (we did Country Roads of Italy) was to take our cabin bag to the bus when we were about to board and when the porters had finished putting the suitcases in we could then put our cabin bags in the compartments. When we got off the bus at our hotel we would collect our own cabin bag and take it with us. Hope this helps.

Happy travelling.

There is a small overhead rack on the coach, in which you can put a small carry on or a jacket or something else small. I have a wheeled tote that I put underneath, as Yon Yon suggests.

The motorcoach racks, at least the ones I have been on, won't take anything much larger than the carry-ons that Insight and other tour companies furnhish you.

Thank you for the adsvise.
Guess we will not take our airplane carry on luggage(really a small suitcase with wheels) but that sure does limit us and I have a machine for my asthma that takes up a bit of room. Will not check it in in case the bags are lost...Been there done that.

You can take your airplane carry-on -- I have taken mine (small suitcase with wheels) on 4 tours with no problem. It won't be portered, but I simply carry it to the coach on travel days and it gets stored under the coach. When we arrive at a hotel, I retrieve it from under the coach and carry it to the room.

I also carry a small backpack/fabric bag (which I pack in my checked luggage) to put on the coach to carry things I might need during the day (jacket, umbrella, etc).

So if I understand everyone- you can still have your usual size carry on for a plane but its best to tote it yourself and store under the bus while touring? Is that correct?

I always take a real small wheeled case 16" and take it out to the bus and back. Remember though if everyone did this there would not be room and you would have to put it under your feet during the day. I have not had a problem putting it under the bus but someone told me one time that it was full and they had to keep it with them during the day. We have taken several trips and never had a problem. I always figure mine is small enough I could live with having it under my feet during the day.

Like many Ozzies who travel to Europe, we usually travel for 6 to 8 weeks, so really need a backpack to carry the extras we need for such an extended stay.

We pack our Insight bags into our suitcase until we commence our first tour, when they are used to carry our jackets, cameras, drinks etc for the day.

We carry our backpacks to the bus & the driver packs them under until we retrieve them at the end of the day. However I found the backpack caused some shoulder & neck pain this trip, so in future will take a small wheeled case that most people seem to use these days.
