A fairly common question on this BB is: "How much should I budget for daily expenditure during tours?"

I, and several others, have provided answers from time to time based on our past experience but I noticed today that the topic is well covered in an Insight Travellers Guide to Britain, Ireland and Europe booklet (received with our tour documents). Unfortunately, travellers only receive this booklet when they have booked their tours and are about to depart. I'm sure there are many people who visit this BB who are only at the stage of reviewing the likely total cost of this type of touring who would appreciate this kind of advice. Insight's advice is as follows:
quote:
BUDGETING – HOW MUCH SHOULD I BRING?
This is obviously a difficult question to answer, since the amount will vary from person to person and from tour to tour. Insight itineraries include many features which will save you money on tour – if you study your tour pages in the Insight brochure, you will see how many highlight visits and other sightseeing is included, as well as meals and entertainments.

Meals: Lunches are usually not included and people's requirements vary. We suggest US$9–12 per day.
Where evening meals are not included, the cost will depend on the type and location of restaurant used. As a guide, in Europe allow US$28–38 per day whilst in Britain and Ireland we suggest US$26–34 per day.

You should budget for drinks with meals, refreshment stops during the day. Non-alcoholic drinks cost approximately US$2 each.

Optional Excursions: Experience has shown us that most passengers participate in these excursions and you should therefore budget per person as follows, assuming that the majority are purchased:

All SuperSaver Tours: US$50–60 per day
All First Class Tours: US$40–50 per day

Optional Tours will usually be priced in Euros (or Pounds Sterling in Britain). Payment can be made in cash, travellers’ cheques and certain credit cards. If paying by credit card, payment is only taken in either Sterling or Euros.

Personal Expenditure: Souvenirs, stamps, postcards, telephone calls, taxi fares, laundry. Allow yourself US$6–8 per day whilst in Europe, and US$9–11 per day in Britain and Ireland, plus extra for any major gifts.

You are advised, whatever your personal requirements may be, to bring more money rather than less. Once overseas, it can be complicated and very time consuming to transfer additional funds from home, especially when you are on the move. You cannot always draw extra money on credit cards and they are still not accepted everywhere. Personal cheques are not generally accepted outside your own country.

I believe this information would be a worthwhile addition to the Travel Tips webpage of each of the Insight websites.

Insight also include recommendations on gratuities/tipping on their Travel Tips webpage as follows:
quote:

GRATUITIES
On an Insight Vacation, some gratuities are included in the price of your trip: baggage handling, meal service for all meals listed in the tour itinerary, and hotel service charge. Room service, however, is not included in the tour price.

TIPPING
Tipping is a widespread practice in Europe and North America and is a customary way of acknowledging service. Here are some guidelines:

  • Taxi fare, on meter 10-15%
  • Restaurant, total bill 10-15%
  • Tour Director €4.00 per person per day
  • Motorcoach Driver €2.50 per person per day
  • Local Sightseeing Guide €1.00
  • When Service Charge is included, for service above average, a small extra tip is suggested.

Phil,
A good summary of costs, but you omitted one major (if optional) one: tipping the TD & driver. Insight provide advice on this with the package they send you 6 weeks or so before departure. I forget the precise recommendations and I don't have the written details with me. Perhaps someone can provide them. They tend to run into $00's.

Cheers,
Ray

Hi Ray,

I've now added the Insight recommendations on tipping in my post above.

So what is the expectation with the per person, per day, tipping - should you tip them every day, or at the end of the trip, or at the start of the trip?

Thanks, Brett.

Hi, Jacketts

We tipped the TD and driver at the end of the tour. There will be other guides for specific locations throughout the tour and we tipped them at the end of their presentation - generally 1 or 2 euros per person depending on the length of time they spent with us (and the quality.) Some guides were excellent, and some were good but....

Just remember that Aussies are lousy tippers ... and are known as such througout the world Wink

I don't care what the recommendation is, I will never tip if the service was bad. If the servie was good, it will be about 15% of the pretax amount (that is the US way it is done, and seems to be the expected norm). I will generally round that up to the nearest $0.50 (total) for the bill.

Tip more for outstanding service.

BUT remember, a tip while now generally expected, is actually a sign of appreciation. Tip the amount that you feel is appropriate.

We estimate $600pp for optionals for each trip and actual cost varies with the optionals offered. Meals are minor as so many, except lunches, are inluded and dinners that are not shown included in the itinerary are often filled in with optionals that include dinner so if you take all the offered dinner optionals you may never have to find a meal on your own with the exception of the first and last nights and even some tours have optionals that include dinners on these nights,i.e.farewell dinner the last night.

The original post is dated May 2004 so I am wondering how good these figures are for 2007? I don't travel until Sept 07 but I'm interested now. Confused

Dean, the prices are still fairly valid for 2007, in as much as, if I pay AUD$1.00, I expect the cost in Europe to be 1 Euro or GBP1 if in the UK . The suggested tip is still USD$4.00 for the TD and USD$2.50 for the driver. I just convert that recommended amount to the local currency and take it from there.

40x4USD per day = 160 USD per day

Living away from home, mobile phone bills, paying for laundry, on call 24 hours a day in case of emergency,

from my observations most tds are on the job for 15 hrs per day with no rest days on tour,

with all the out of home expenses long hours and extra work in case of emergency, I would want to earn more than 160 USD per day to do their job, and taking into account, some people probably walk away without even saying thank you
