I have bought sim cards from Vodafone in the past to use in my own phone and bought enough credit to get me by. About 100 pounds worth for six weeks.

If you are intending to phone back to Canada though you might seek further advice from others. I usually only phone people in Europe or UK and maybe the odd call to Australia. I tend to text most of the time. International roaming is very, very expensive, but is ok for text messaging. If you are going to be in Italy the entire time I would tend to buy an Italian sim card.

I'm not sure whether Verizon has the same plans as AT&T (our provider), but when we went to Italy last fall we upgraded to a phone that had international capability and purchased a $5/month option for international calling - that way we didn't have any roaming fees and I think we paid about 10 cents per minute. Your local Verizon store should be able to tell you which phones have international calling capability - you could do some online research with Verizon to see which phones would be good and what the plans are.

We have Verizon and they have a "loaner" program. Call 800-711-8300, they will be glad to talk to you. It sounded like a good deal but the timing wasn't quite right.

We ended up buying the Mobil International Phone. (Go to SkyMall.com) It connects quick and once you purchase the phone there is no monthly charge. You only pay when you use the phone.
