Hi Janell,

Also, do you recommend going to Osia Antica - it seems like it would be an interesting place to see. Any other comments for this trip would be appreciated. Thanks!

I can certainly recommend a visit to Ostia. We went there for a half day tour with a local company whilst we were spending a week in Rome between Insight tours. You can gain an excellent appreciation of the size and scale of the ruins at Ostia by this photo of Ostia seen from the sky.

Two other favourites of ours are:

  • the Capitoline Museums, comprising three main buildings surrounding the Piazza del Campidoglio and interlinked by an underground gallery beneath the piazza, and,
  • Tivoli, to the east of Rome, where you can visit Villa Adriana (Hadrians Villa). Built by the Emperor Hadrian, starting from 117 A.D., it is the most extensive ancient Roman villa, covering an area of at least 80 hectares, more or less as Pompeii. Nearby is Villa d'Este, a masterpiece of the Italian Garden that is included in the UNESCO world heritage list. With its impressive concentration of fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water, and music, it constitutes a much-copied model for European gardens in the mannerist and baroque styles. In the 16th century Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este had much of the marble and statues in Hadrian's villa removed to decorate his own Villa.

I found great directions for getting to Ostia Antica complete with pictures on www.roninrome.com Ron In Rome is an American living in Rome and gives great advice and directions. We are also arriving 6 days ahead of our tour and I found his site very helpful.

I hope you have a great time.....Kathie
