I will be going to Italy for the first time (and by myself) on the Italian Splendours tour in Nov 2009 and leaving a few days early and wanted to know if anyone can recommend any good (not too pricey) restaurants around the Beverly Hills Grand Hotel.

Also, do you recommend going to Osia Antica - it seems like it would be an interesting place to see.

Any other comments for this trip would be appreciated. Thanks!

I loved visiting Ostia Antica. It was easy to organise on my own trip by train (metro line B) and the site is only a short walk from the station. Apparently you can also travel by boat too. The site is huge but when I was there there were very few people about. If you want to hear a guide to listen to as you walk about remember to take some ID. This is an interesting website: http://www.ostia-antica.org/

Sorry I can't help with the restaurants as I the Insight tours I took didn't stay there.

Also, do you have any recommendation for good walking shoes?

I'm afraid I can't help with the walking shoes as I wear trainers but there have been a number of posts on that topic so if you use the Find tab at the top of this I'm sure you get plenty of suggestions.

I notice you're travelling in November so I guess the boat trip may not be available. I will look forward to hearing how you get on.

Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes. Haven't been on a trip in years and after finishing chemo treatments last year I decided I'd better go before something else happens as I've always wanted to see Italy.

On my recent tour, our TD offered an optional to Ostia Antica. Not sure how you might find out if it will be offered on your tour, so you might as well do on your own before the tour start. It is well worth the effort. Areas are better preserved than pompeii, etc.
Have a great trip.

Thanks for the reply. What tour did you take in Italy? Also, what hotel did you stay in Rome?
Thanks!

Jannell, I was on the Romantic European. We had a change of hotel in Rome, and honestly I don't remember the name of the place we stayed.

There is a GREAT place not far from Grand Hotel Beverly Hills. It is: Al Simeto. It is on Via San Simeto 34, around the corner from the hotel, and down a block and a half, then across the street. When you leave the hotel, turn left.

Hopefully the place is still there, as it has been a few years. It is not a tourist place, as we have seen only locals there. It is not expensive, great pasta, great wine.

Near the Trevi Fountain, there is another great very small place: Piccolo Aranico, on Vicolo Scanderberg 112, a block east of the Trevi. It is down a very narrow alley, with a few sidewalk tables. Very good food, and reasonable for Rome. Again, if it is still there, as it has been a few years.

I suggest you read several of the existing Journals on this board, including mine (Amazing Italy) to gain further insight as to things to do and see on your own.

Hi Marv,
Thanks for the info - I did read your travel tale - very interesting. I am really looking forward to my trip. Sounds like you and your family really like Italy too. Just wondering where you are located in NC - I grew up in the Charlotte area, but have lived in FL for over 30 yrs.
