While on our tour in Italy, where is the best place to keep our travel documents and items of most importance.

During the flight from Canada our passports and plane tickets and travel vouchers will be on our person, most likely in our travel bag so they are handy.

Once we have arrived, I know we need to keep our passport in our hidden pouch along with money and travel tickets, but what about other items of importance while we are touring. For the days we are travelling to another hotel, is our luggage the safest place while it is packed in the coach, or is our travel bag tucked under our seat safer.

For the days where our suitcase is in a hotel, is locked in our suitcase (if there isn't a room safe) the safest place, or in our travel bag tucked under the coach seat?

Thanks for your help.

I use hotel safes for the items I'm not carrying with me. I do use room safes though there are those who would not and if they're not available I ask at reception for a method of safely storing my valuables. So far this has worked.
I'm not keen on leaving things which I value on buses as there is a possibility that they could be broken into. On travelling days most of my valuanles which to be honest are not much more than what you mentioned are secreted about my person and the rest is locked in my suitcase.

My husband usually carries them on his person when we are out of the room.

We have just bought a small computer [9" diagonal screen] for photos and email, and it is small enough to fit in his slingpod [pack?] to carry when off the coach.

Thanks Colleen. I think we can probably hide most on our person. Somethings which I would be considered valuable are copies of passports, insurance information, which I believe we could lock in our suitcases. I didn't know whether locked in a suitcase in a hotel room was safer than in our travel carry-on bags that would be left on a bus when we were out an about.

ZGordon...... what is a slingpod? We are also going to take a we little computer, again I wasn't sure where we would keep it during the day. A slingpod "sounds" like just the thing, but I'm not certain what it is. If it were something a man could carry, like I would carry my purse...... over my head and across my body in front, I think my hubby might wear it??

Do you have a Mountain Equipment Coop Store? That is where my husband got his. He has about 4 different sizes. It is sort of a back pack that slings across his body, and when brought around to the front, it has the zipper on the upper side for ease of opening.

I found this version on line - it looks a lot bigger than the ones we have. They do come smaller.
sling pack

Our daughter was the first one in the family to get one - you could certainly wear one.

I always scan a copy of my passport, credit cards, and ticketing information, as well as the Insight Vouchers and then email these scanned copies to my hotmail address. Thus if it really turns bad, I can get colour copies of all these documents to show to relevant authorities, all you need is access to an internet linked computer, with preferably a colour printer attached. Thank heavens I have not yet had to use this "backup".
I know a lot of other folks do this, but at the same time I have also found a lot of others have never thought of this option. For what it is worth folks.
Cheers

ZGordon..thanks for the link. I'll run it by "hubby" to see if he would be agreeable to wearing one. It would certainly be the best place to keep the computer safe.

JJA.......that is a great idea. That would certainly be a great way to have easy access to these documents. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I just came back from a tour and the TD always told us to leave passports in the safe BUT to remember to take them out before leaving for the next hotel. He said he had a passenger once who realized she left her passport in a hotel safe, after they were too far out to turn back. Every time we left a hotel, he would ask if we all had our passports. I'm always afraid I'll forget something, so I never use the safes. I usually leave it in my carry on bag in the room, and hope the hotel room is safe enough. Either that, or I carry it with me and make sure I hang on to my bag with the zipper facing me.

I set a reminder on my mobile phone so that I don't leave anything behind. A couple of years ago I was on an Insight tour when a gentleman suddenly remembered he'd left his wallet and papers under the matress. We were travelling by private car (the bus having taken the rest of the group on an optional) and the driver had to drive at least one hour back to pick the items up (his wife wasn't amused either). He was lucky as I can't imagine a bus doing the same thing.

I take a pack of "sticky notes" along. As I put stuff into spots around the hotel room at night, I jot a reminder on a sticky note and put the sticky note on the night table. In the morning, we have a mini packing list and it helps us remember to gather up all our items before checking out.
