Never understood the Australian obsession with Vegemite. It is at best an acquired taste, is virtually indistinguishable from Marmite among others of its ilk and isn't overly Australian, being made by a subsidiary of an American comoany. (Kraft) |

Hi Expom,
I know many people would agree with you in relation to Vegemite, but surely one of the experiences of travel is to try different foods. Fried crickets & tarantulas in Vietnam -horrors - I'd wonder about how they could eat them. Dragon & I between us persuaded Patrick to try Vegemite - with the expected results. A couple of Canadians & an American also tried it - with one even saying she would try it again. I think it was great to introduce them to the black spread - something that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't taken that bright yellow tube on our travels. As for it not being a true Ozzie product - it was developed by the Fred Walker Cheese Factory in 1922, & has been MADE & sold IN AUSTRALIA since 1923. Yes, its owned by Kraft - which is owned by Phillip Morris - but with globilisation that is a reality for many products. I don't think that makes it any less Australian. Now I'm home I've given up Vegemite anyway, & am using my preferred Promite. Tuffet |

Tuffet, I still smile when I remember the look on Patrick's face when he tried the vegemite.

Welcome home Dragon. I also smile when I think of Patrick's expression when he tasted the Vegemite.
However, isn't it fortunate he listened to me & just tried a scrape of the brown stuff on a piece of toast? If he'd listened to you when you tried to lead him astray he'd have been sucking on a whole teaspoon of it!!! We'd have been resuscitating him poor fellow. Not nice Dragon. Tuffet |

To get back to the original topic, about chips in credit cards, I found only one place in France where my card wouldn't work - a book store in Paris which was not tourist oriented.
Whether or not they will let you charge is another matter - in some places it was for a minimum of 20 euros, other places let you charge much smaller sums. |
