Hi Cat,

Yes I did do the "White Pass & Yukon Route and I would thoroughly recommend it, the trip is around 40 miles round trip and it takes about 3 hours. The history alone, around the making of the railway is amazing. We saw lots of animal life including bears and the views from the summit of white Pass were breathtaking.

This was the only tour I did because the one I wanted to do The helicopter and dog sledding ride was booked out before I even got to the ship, so if you decide to go, I would recommend booking your tour through the cruise website of whatever ship you travel on.

Cheers
Missie

Gertie we have been to Alaska in June, July and August and not a mossie to be seen on each occasion. We must have been lucky indeed so I am not going to complain about the lack of that particular piece of wildlife. Big Grin

Not that it would have been a major concern in any case as we are used to mosqitoes at home here and we have what we call the Hexham Greys. In fact we breed them so big we slap saddles on their backs and ride them. Wink Big Grin

Cats, personally I enjoyed Alaska on each visit.

However, I think to get the most enjoyment out of Alaska you have to get ouside of the Anchorage-Denali-Fairbanks strip that most people seem to do.

Think about taking an overnight trip of flying from Anchorage to Kotzebue (which is located on the Tundra north of the Arctic Circle and where you stop overnight in a "Hotel" which is realy a huge tin shed from the outside with refrigerant poles all around it to stop the warmth from the "Hotel" allowing it to sink into the Tundra), then fly on the next morning to facinating Nome for the day before flying back to Anchorage in the afternoon. There are great tours in Nome and an excelent cutural show in Kotzebue. They are interesting to visit and there is a wealth of information to be gained from both of these places.

Take a 7 or 8 day land tour of some of the Alaskan National Parks or better still take a land tour from Fairbanks that winds down to Skagway via such places as Dawson City.

From Anchorage there are several great day trips out to bays and glaciers etc.

There is a lot to see if you have the time to plan it in.

Hello Miss Susie,

I did the Rocky Mountaineer train tour at the end of May this year from Banff to Vancouver in Gold Leaf.

I can thoroughly recommend this tour, the scenery from the train was magnificent and the service on the train was the best I have ever experienced, and I have travelled from Adelaide to Perth on the Indian Pacific and The Ghan to Alice Springs both in Gold Class.

I do not believe you will be disappointed. Smiler

Cheers

It appears some travellers maybe justifiably disgruntled and indeed disappointed with changes announced re: Rocky Mountaineer as an option for 2007... its only to be used on a few occassions by Insight travellers and on less scenic routes than previous tours had offered.
A pity ...as anyone who has used the service will vouch for the quality of service and the splendour of the routes offered and enjoyed by many.

There is a lot to be said for the new Rocky Mountaineer train offered by Insight in 2007 on the Majestic Canadian West tour. In terms of scenery, it probably surpasses the other routes in that you don't have the Vancouver part os it that can be somewhat lengthy and not as scenic as there is much freight traffic to deal with. Not only do you get the Rockies day when travelling between Jasper and Quesnel but you get another day of absolutely magnificent scenery between Quesnel and Whistler including one of the highest railway bridges in the world, glacial lakes and travelling along the Fraser Canyon! The town of Quesnel is small authentic Western Canadian town and provides clean comfortable lodging by friendly townsfolk.

Hope this helps!
