Does anyone highly reccommend or not reccommend and optional tour on the PO Princess Diamond cruise in Alaska/Canada. There are so many to choose from and I really have no idea. Any advice would be appreciated.

We were on a Holland America cruise in August 2004 southbound from Seward to Vancouver. We did two optionals in Ketchikan and Juneau. The Whitepass Railroad and a helicopter glacier landing in Juneau. Expensive but worthwhile.

After all, when will you ever get to Alaska again.

Cheers

We have done both those optionals on another cruise line and we also did white water rafting [ a 3 out of 5, i think] they were all good.

Hi Cath

We're just back from our trip and the opinion of optionals varied greatly amongst our group!

We booked a VIP tour in Juneau which had four integral tours...the only good value amongst these integral tours was to be the visit to the Mendenhall Glacier. This can be done on its own.

The Skagway rail trip is excellent we did this and a tour to a gold dredge which was interesting.

We cancelled all our bookings in Ketchikan following our bad experience in Juneau. We were not alone!

Its probably just as well...it poured rain for our complete stay there...the town itself is nice and on a fine day (very rare) tours could be nice also.

Hope this helps

We went on the Diamond Princess last summer and had a wonderful trip! I highly recommend a helicopter ride to a glacier (we did this in Juneau), as well as the Glacier Point Wilderness Safari in Skagway where you canoe to the face of a glacier (the canoe has a motor, so you really don't have to paddle much). Both are absolutely breathtaking!

We also did a helicopter tour while at Denali Park. That went 50 mmiles back into the mountains. Quite an experience.

There is also a fixed wing flight from Skagway that flies out over the mountains and down Glacier Bay. Great scenery. Roll Eyes Cool Big Grin

The company uses Twin Otter aircraft modified with large outward bulging picture windows along the side and they have plug-ins at each seat for your video camera so that you can record the commentary and music direct through the aircrafts systems while you are filming. Big Grin

If anybody is planning a trip to Alaska, be sure to take a fixed wing or helicopter trip. It is an experience you will remember the rest of your life.
