Hi everyone, my hubby and I are thinking about travelling to Europe Dec/Jan 07 (first European vacation) and are thinking about adding on the winter wonderland tour. I'd be grateful to hear from others who may have done this tour, in particular, how many times the bus stops along the Romantic road (whether for photo stops or other) and is there plenty of time in say Munich and Lucerne to do a couple of side trips - such as a quick trip up to Zurich on the side? Anything advice would be appreciated. thanks

I don't know about that specific tour, but it is rare on most tours to have time to go to another city. There is usually something scheduled every day. Of course, you can "opt out" as long as you let the tour director know not to wait for you. I was in Stockholm with Insight last December and a lady who was on the tour did not do any of the activities there, as she spent the time with friends. We saw her at breakfast, and that was it. Of course, she was paying for outings she did not participate in.
Activities near Munich or Zurich can be subject to change, as it snows that time of year. But if cold weather and short daylight hours don't bother you, it's a good time to go in terms of things being less crowded, and seeing the Christmas markets. |

You will have time for pit stops along the road. You'll actually stop at some really good picture spots-Christmas card spots! We went on this tour in 05. As Bob said, you can opt out but really, you won't want to. We have been on two different tours at this point and find our tours are better staying with the group than going out on our own. We did have a few people who took the train to Italy for a day from Lucern but they didn't really get to do anything while they were there. Lucern has some pretty good stuff to go and see. It is not a small country city...also, go on the excursions they are worth it. Especially the sound of music one. It was very fun getting to see all of the stuff from the movie and take a trap through the mountains.

Hi Manda,
My husband and I are also planning to do the Winter Wonderland tour (in early december) - After the tour, we are catching a trian to Paris to spend a couple of days roaming around on our own. The countries are all so close in Europe and are only a short train/plane/bus trip away from each other. Why not extend your stay a couple of days (either before or after the tour) and do your side trips then? That way you get to experience everything your tour has to offer, plus get to do your 'extras' as well! I'm so excited about the tour - it sounds so AMAZING! Especially all the christmas festivities around that time of year! Anyway, I hope it all works out for you and you decide to go. Take care, Pickles |

We were on the Winter Wonderland tour in March 2002. It was an outstanding trip and only cost $699 US land only at that time. This was our first Insight tour.

Recently received Winter Wonderland brochure and thinking of taking a Christmas Market tour.
Looking for recommendations/suggestions/hints. I've taken several tours with Insight so know a bit about them, but really think traveling that time of year would be exciting. Any comments appreciated. |

I don't know if you are a native of California or a transplant, but if you have not experienced Winter weather in, say, the Midwest U. S., Europe will be a bit chilly for you, and there are only about 7-8 hours of daylight. But, the Christmas markets are fun, and you can get some gifts you won't find at Walmart. Last year I did Christmas Markets of Scandanavia and Berlin, and I loved every minute of it. If you have specific questions, I will do my best to answer them.

Hi Manda
My husband, Ian and I are also thinking about doing the Winter Wonderland or Winter Explorer in Dec/Jan 2007 and this will also be out first European vacation. We're a bit concerned about the cold, but think it will make it very special. Looking forward to a cold Christmas for a change! Kate |

Bob H,
Thanks for the note. Was born and raised in Oklahoma and spent 27 years traveling around world with U.S. Navy. Have been on four Insight tours which included Europe and cold weather. Should not be a problem. I'll try to have some specific questions for you in a day or so. Thanks again. Erroll |

March is also a good time to go. Temperatures were in the fifties and sixties when we went on the last scheduled tour in 2002.
