I think it refers to a hailstorm.

Yes, Max, he was referring to a hailstorm. I see that Rome is getting snow!

When we go to Italy in October, we sure don't want to deal with any snow. Hopefully the temps will be in the fifties and sixties.

Cheers

Thanks again to all who continue to contribute to this "EPI Tour" Bulletin Board. We would particularly like to thank "ohdonna", who answered so many of our questions from our first post!

"ohdonna" made some recomendations for places to eat (particularly near the hotels that you stay at on the "EPI Tour"). We would appreciate any other "Restaurant Recomendations" people could make (again, particularly, but not exlusively, those near the hotels that we will be staying at). While we hope to have a few really nice meals on this trip, we would welcome any recomendations for any inexpensive places to eat as we are trying to keep our "Food Costs" in check. "ohdonna" sounded less than enthraled with the "Included Meals" on the Tour. We would appreciate comments from others re: their "Included Meal" experiences, and/or their experiences with any of the "Optional Meal Excursions" (eg: "Venice by Night"; "Dinner in Tuscany"; the "Medici Banquet"; or the "Roman Dinner Party"). Were the "Optional Meal Excursions" worth it?

"ohdonna" mentioned that in Florence, the Uffizi optional was cancelled. Did any one else have a similar problem with any of their "Planned Optionals"? Again, we would appreciate any comments (positive or negative) with any of the "Optional Excursions" that you have taken. Were they worth the extra costs?

"ohdonna" mentioned that their tour had their accomodations in Florence "upgraded"/changed to the Hotel Ambasciatori. Did any subsequent tours have any of the "scheduled hotels" changed? If so, which hotels/where? And, how were they? "ohdonna" mentioned problems with the hot water at the Borromini Hotel in Rome. Did subsequent tours encounter the same problem at the Borromini Hotel? Does anyone else have any concerns/"Heads-Up" about any of the accomodations on the "EPI Tour"?

We are about two months away from our scheduled departure and we are starting to get excited!!

Pat and Mary...You might want to look under the topic "I'm confused" in the premium Europe and Britain category. John of Insight, updated some of the hotels for EPI. I've checked them out. They sound wonderful! Be sure and do the Burano optional in Venice and the La Certosa optional in Florence. Wonderful food and a great time in both places. Can I hide in your pocket? I'm ready to go back.
Enjoy

Hi, I am a new member planning a family holiday on the Easy Pace Tour. My question pertains to the difference in hotel accomodations from winter to summer. The winter tour does not go the lakes region but does anyone know if the other hotel switches in Venice, Florence and Rome will remain the same, as they appear to be better locales, perhaps better dining as well. Donna, I read your note about message "I am confused" but I wasn't sure if John confirmed the change was for both tour periods. Also, I attended an info meeting hosted by an Insight rep last evening, and she indicated that more admissions were included than I have read about on this forum. IE, the Doge's Palace - is that admission included? Or are the various famous sights "seen" as you drive past them via motorcoach? All the posts have been wonderful to read with excellent tips on what not to miss so that one can plan ahead. In consideration of weather can anyone comment on traveling in early November compared to mid October? We are planning on extending our trip to the Cinque Terra and are not sure of coastal temps. any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi Donna T:

Are you planning on going on one of the remaining "EPI Winter Tours" of this year, one of this Summer's EPI tours, or an "EPI Tour at some later date?

If you are planning on going on one of the remaining "WPI /Winter Tours, see Star's post of Nov. 20th above. She has a list of just about all the optionals for this Winter's EPI Tour and their costs in Euros. Note that she lists a Day-trip to Como Lake from Milan.

If you going this "Winter Season", maybe we'll see you.

Pat & Mary,
thanks for a response. Our plans are for either Fall '05 or one of the first winter tours (Nov. '05) dates yet to be published. Contemplating the cost savings from summer to winter rates really helps as our trip is extended for an additional week. We definitely want to visit the Lake region and November begins the slow time. Weather temps begin to cool but it doesn't sound that it generally affects the quality of the tour. I'm hoping that the new hotels in Venice, Florence and Rome are permanent changes as they seem a bit nicer. Enjoy your holiday. Ciao

Hi Donna T, Pat and Mary. I found Milan to be very underrated. It's a beautiful city, very interesting and we saw little of the industrial side. The duomo is stunning! What a contrast to some of the other cathedrals you will see, gigantic yet with a weightless air. The Galleria and La Scala are nearby. Sforza castle is a treasure trove with Michelangelo's 4th Pieta and a room painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. Don't forget the Last Supper. Another surprise for me was the 'Brera' art museum. A small easy to digest museum with unexpected pieces...Canaletto's Venice, Mantegna's Death of Christ and many pieces new to me but most enjoyable.
The hotel in Milan was the Star Hotel Ritz was the nicest of the tour. A bit distant, but near a subway stop.
We did take a day optional up to Como and the lake. I'm really quite happy we stayed in Milan. And if other winter EPI tours are based in Milan, I sure everyone will find plenty to do with their time.
Enjoy
Donna

Hi, Star - I realize it has been a year or two since you went on the EPI tour, but I am about to go on November 1, and would sppreciate any insider information you could offer. Would you invest in the Uffizi gallery? For the most part, except for St. Peter's, I don't know what is worth investing in. I am a first time Italy traveler, and am very interested in my photography - my senses tell me that there will be plenty to do just by looking around and investigating the cities. Also, did you get to the Florence flea market???

Please let me hear from you - you can e-mail me at home inthemomentphotos@comcast.net

Thanks for sharing.

So yes, Burano was offered, we went out there as the sun was setting and arrived as the children were all returning home from school. The little town is colourful and delightful and the food was great.

Lucca is a little town completely enclosed by an intact medieval wall. We adored rambling through the cobblestone streets and shopping our way back to the coach. The prices in the shops were considerably cheaper than the big city.

San Gimignano is a small town in the Tuscan hills. The scenery on our drive out there was incredible, we saw people harvesting the olives by hand. The sun was shining and it was exactly as you would imagine Tuscany to be. The town of San Gimignano is set on a hill with many towers. We walked around the town and it was there that I found a handmade birdhouse, made in San Gimignano, by the shopkeeper's family. This was my favourite optional by far.

Assisi is part of the tour and is another charming small town that we spent a few hours exploring.

If you do every optional you will find yourself busy almost everyday. We had one day in Venice without optionals. We had planned a busy day for ourselves but Acqua Alta and a fierce rain storm kept us indoors most of the day which was a welcome relief on Day 7 of our tour. Lots of intrepid adventurers went out anyways but we were glad for the rest.

All the included activities for the tour were great as well. It was our first time to Italy and we learned and saw so much. Debra told us that on the other tours she tells the group that they are not on holiday but on a tour and the pace is frenetic. Our pace was by no means lazy but staying 3 nights at each city made it feel more like a holiday.

Luckily I kept a daily journal or the trip would have disappeared in a blur!
