My travel agent has just informed me that if you are traveling to the Czech Republic, you must carry travelers insurance or Czech gov. can deny entry. Has anyone else heard of this?????
Does anyone have an annual travel insurance policy and at what cost? |

SRM, I've traveled to Czech Republic twice in as many years with Insight and have never heard of such a requirement at least for short term visits. They are a member of EU and now have many of the same requirements, except they still require visas for US citizens(which they hope to remove by 2007). I visited the official CR web site and there was no mention of such a tourist requirement. Perhaps your TA was looking at long term residency requirements. I would certainly persue it with him/her. You will love Prague,,one of my favorite cities.

SRM,
There is quite a bit of recent discussion of this topic on the Trafalgar BB. Do have a look. I mentioned that I travelled to Romania in June of this year and their embassy required proof of Travel Insurance (particularly medical cover) to be included with your Visa application - ie no cover, no Visa. Czech Rep. have obvipously thought that this needs to be looked at as well - mind you, you wouldn't want to be travelling O/S without cover would you?? |

Interesting. Is this travel insurance and visa requirement a new thing? I went to Prague in March 2001 (and to Hungary, as well) and never showed any proof of travel insurance although I did have it. I have never gotten a visa in my life for any travel. I am a US citizen.
As for Prague...it's wonderful. I was there for 3 nights and in Budapest for 3 nights and would love to go back. LeeParis |

Yes, I also asked and posted updates on the Trafalgar message board under "have you heard this one." Anyone interested in this topic may find it helpful. A visa is not required for US citizens. To summarize, the Czech government is requiring travelers to have medical insurance coverage of $35,000 as stated on the US Gov. website (link on the TT site). Most American medical insurance will cover overseas treatment but only through reimbursements. Therefore, I bought the insurance coverage from my TA since I needed to book the trip ASAP. I have not seen that policy yet but plan on investigating other companies for future travel.
Can anyone recommend a traveler's insurance company? Thanks...srm |

srm, i went to the website and i guess you can read it different ways. since the insurance requirement was included with financial requirement for visas application, i concluded that it would not be required for non-visa entry, ie less than 90 days. as i stated above have been there several times, twice with insight and never a mention of this requirement for short stays. having said that, it is always a good idea to have adequate medical and travel insurance. one company i have used is travel insured international at ******* a little pricey, but good coverage.

The only Visa I have ever required was for Romania in May/June of this year - hence the upfront need for insurance (which wasn't a problem - just interesting).

There are 2 different issues...answer in order:
1. Do you require a visa? A) If yes, then it makes perfect sense that you need to show proof of medical insurance. My husband is not a US citizen and requires a visa to visit different places. In order to get the visa we have to show medical insurance. This is to get the visa, not to enter the country. B) If you DO NOT require a visa, then you only need medical coverage for your own good...otherwise you'll have to pay the bill on your own, basically. But I have never heard of them checking upon entry into the country if you have insurance. They didn't even check our passports when we passed through. Hope this helps you figure it out. Narina |
