While taking the Metro downtown to Plaza Del Sol, be wary of pickpockets on the train and in the plaza.

Jim and Dragon,
A belated thank you for your replies and the information. The hop-on, hop-off sounds a good option (even if we only stay on) as we'll only be travelling from Rome the day before, so no jetlag to worry about.
General Max,
Thanks for the warning regarding pickpockets. When carrying passports and money overseas, we use a money belt, and so far have never been unlucky. Fingers crossed that this continues.
Another question,
Our Spanish is totally non-existent. I presume (fervently hope) English is widely spoken and understood. I studied both German and French at school, and was never very good at speaking either language.

If you are on an Insight tour you should not have too many problems. A small spanish phrase book would not go astray however!!

After our S,P&M tour we went on a 8 day tour of Northern Spain(not Insight). It was a multilingual one and our phrase book certainly came in handy.

If you intend dining by yourself a smattering of spanish will certainly not go astray. As in most countries if you try their language (even if you are not quite successful), it will be appreciated. Jim Smiler

Dragonlady, unfortunately we found that English was not widely spoken in Spain or Portugal. We have a smattering of Spanish and managed quite well when we were on our own after the trip. However, it was very hard to understand the locals as they speak very fast.
It would be helpful if you learnt a few words and phrases.

Thanks for that information. I expect I'll have to find a Spanish dictionary, as we do have one day on our own before the tour begins.

Most Spanish do speak English. I believe Franco required English be taught as a second language.
