Dear Bonnie,
I just read the reviews on Tripadvisor for the Madrid Hotel (NH Alcala) and they are certainly alarming. Perhaps if we wrote to Insight with our concerns they might consider another hotel.

Bonnie,

I just sent an E-mail to Insight with my concerns about the NH Alcala hotel in Madrid.
I hope you will do the same. Thanks for pointing this out.

I'll do the same. The first thing I do when looking at a tour is research the hotels that Insight (or any other tour company) is using. If the group is only staying one night at a badly rated hotel, I might not be overly concerned, but 2 or more nights, yes I am very concerned. You want to be relatively comfortable and definitely feel safe, especially solo travellers. With over 300 hotels in Madrid, you would think they would be able to find a better one.

I must say that neither my wife or I had any problems with the hotel Alcala in Madrid and also found that it was conveniently located to Retiro Park and only a short walk to the Prada as well.

We would stop there again.

I wonder why Insight changed from the Hotel Cuzco in Madrid.

Insight seem to use a variety of hotels in Madrid Max and depending on which tour you take the Madrid hotels at the moment appear to be NH Alcala, NH Euro Building (we stopped at both of these on our Treasures of SP&M tour), Melia Galgos or NH Abascal.

I do recall our TD telling us that they have had to change hotels in Madrid several times because of theft issues in the areas concerned.

That is too bad that theft from hotel rooms is now becoming a problem in Europe. We experienced an incident last October at the Sofitel hotel in Budapest. The hotel replaced the bottle of wine but Mrs Max lost 6 pair of new underwear and two new bras which she had purchased for the trip. These items were taken out of her suitcase.

Dragon,
What's the Euro Building like in Madrid? We have an extra day there between tours and wondered if it's close to anywhere interesting or easy to get somewhere. Also, anywhere reasonable to eat close by?

Hi dragonlady.
We spent 9 nights at the NH Eurobuilding March/April 2006. It is situated in the business district of Madrid and a little way out of the city. The Cuzco metro station is only a couple of blocks from the hotel and will have you in the centre of town in no time. There a few restaurants around but we ate in the hotel and directly across the road from the hotel entrance.
We loved the hotel and the breakfasts are "to die for". Rooms were spacious and the service we received was excellent.
If you only have one day, might I suggest the metro to station "Sol" in the Plaza del Sol and try a hop on, hop of bus. There are three routes and you will get a good cross section of central Madrid.
Have a great trip. Jim Smiler
