Cristoforo Colombo -Rome

Any input about this hotel would be appreciated-
rooms, location, transportation to sights etc

The Hotel Cristoforo Colombo and the Sheraton Roma Hotel are the two principal "Gateway" hotels that Insight uses in Rome for European Essentials and Premium tours respectively. They are both in the EUR [Esposizione Universale Roma] region of Rome (which is an interesting area for exploration in its own right [see: Exploring EUR - Cultural Itineraries by the Tourist Office of Rome]).

Central Rome is not easily accessible by tour coaches and the "Gateway" hotels are chosen (in this case) both for proximity to the Leonardo da Vinci - Fiumicino Airport and for ease of departure of the coach travelling out of Rome. It is also true that the tariffs for these hotels are cheaper than for hotels in Central Rome but I believe that both are quite comfortable hotels (I've only stayed at the Sheraton).

There may appear to be a small problem for travellers who want to arrive a day or more earlier at these hotels than their tour start date (or stay after their tour) and certainly when I have stayed in Rome (usually for much longer periods), I've stayed in a hotel right in the centre of Rome but the last time I took a cab from the Sheraton into central Rome it cost approximately €10 and as a percentage of my overall travel costs was a trivial expense.
