I am booked on the Highlights of Italy tour in Oct '08 and want to spend a few extra days in Rome. I wondered if this hotel is ok to use as a base for independent sightseeing or should I look for a more centrally located hotel. I am a single female and don't want too much hastle in changing hotels. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Pauline,
I have a habit of leaving out important information! It is the Cristoforo Colombo, Insight uses this hotel in Rome on all their SuperSaver tours.

Hi Langer i stayed at this Hotel on my Highlights of Italy and found it OK, as i caught the metro (train) & bus & sometimes a taxi into the city.
If you have money to burn then move closer to Rome, i only used the Hotel to sleep and eat breakfast, i ate out for all other meals. The hotel is out of the way.....it depends what you want.
I hope you have a grand time in Italy.....i wish to do the tour all over again.

Hi Alicat,
Thanks so much for your thoughts on the hotel, I was mainly worried about catching the metro as I am travelling solo. Thanks also for your wonderful tour tale, I have printed it off and read it all the time, it makes me very excited to think I will be going to all these places too. I also hope we get to go to San Gimignano as it isn't listed as an optional for 2007.

Hi Helen,
"San Gi" is incredibly worthwhile if you can possibly get there. If Insight doesn't offer it as an "optional", talk to the concierge at your hotel about bus or train (public)transport. See as many of the hill towns as you can while in the regions of Tuscany and Umbria. They all bear their own unique history and are beautiful. Take a look at Insight's Country Roads of Italy if the hilltop towns and their history and culture are more of interest to you than the "touristy" stuff.

Have a great trip! Jim

Hi Jim,
The history and countryside of Italy is certainly where my interest lies. I have read several history books of Italy and am also interested in architecture. The country roads tour would have been my preference for sure but for the cost. I will save up to go on the tour of Sicily next as I love the history of this amazing island. Thanks for your good wishes and enjoy your tour!

Hi Sandry,
When you return please let me know how you enjoyed your trip as I will be going in October. While I am no longer going to stay in Rome (I'm going to Paris instead) I did a lot of research on hotels and tours. I think if you are going to stay a few days then having a hotel that is within walking distance of the city is more ideal. You can check out hotels under TripAdvisor. I also discovered that there are a number of english speaking walking tours of Rome which look fantastic. Good luck with your decision and have a great time.
