My 18 year old son has a question re legal drinking age in various locations. We live in Alberta, where the legal age is 18. We fly to Toronto to change planes for London, and he wants to know if he wants to have wine with his dinner on the plane, because the flight departs from Ontario (where the age is 19), will he be permitted? when he flew to Japan from Vancouver last summer, he was not permitted because the legal age in BC is 19. We found some info online about UK, Italy etc, but could not find an answer to this question. Also what about Austria and Switzerland? our tour goes to these countries also.

A few years ago we went through Pearson to Paris. I was travelling with my 2 daughters 18 and 19. They had wine with their meal and no one asked them their ages. On the way home they were asked and I said it was OK for the 18 year old so they let her have it. I think it depends on the flight attendant.
In France there is no problem for kids to drink wine, maybe they have to be 16, but no one asks. However it never occurred to me that she would not be able to bring alcohol into the country, I think we were legal as we brought 3 750 ml bottles of wine, since I think we are allowed 1.5 bottles each but maybe we are not allowed to combine them. It would have been safer to bring 1 bottle each, ie 2 bottles. I usually don't bring alcohol home but the girls wanted to bring some for their dad and brother. |

Sandy: Not sure what tour your taking but the legal drinking age in Austria is 16 and in Switzerland 16-18 for wine and beer and over 18 for anything else. If your lucky enough to stay in Lucerne at the Astoria Hotel they have a great night club on the top floor with a killer view on the outdoor patio. Next door to this hotel is the hottest night club in the country called the Club Prague. Both are very safe and have more than enough security. Remember this is a very high end university city, clean, safe and wonderful people.

The drinking age in Germany is 16 and when my son who was 16 at the time went there on an exchange program his host spent every evening at the local Bar with his school friends. The Australian boys who were underage to drink back home were given the big lecture by the teacher but guess what they all drank... Guess they didn't want to feel left out.
