Sorry I can't help with your question; but what a great attitude.

Whatever you do you are going to enjoy it!

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

We usually stay at the Cardiff Hotel which is close to Paddington Station, the terminus for the Heathrow Express and a similar distance from Hyde Park and within walking distance of Oxford Street for the averagely fit. Or you can get the tube (subway) within 2 minutes walk.

The hotel is clean and comfortable and reasonably cheap for inner London, although not exactly the Hilton or Savoy of course. The web site is: www.cardiff-hotel.com for you to look before you buy.

Hi Karen & Will
If you haven't travelled around the UK before I would say 'go for it" The Gems of Britain" is very similar to a tour we did a number of years ago when we were also filling in a gap in our travel. We have since been back a couple of times and done a lot more exploring and have revisited most of these places. I notice that this tour is offered as both First Class and Super Saver.

If you have not been to London before, you can very easily spend a week in London, going to museums, plays and shopping.
Seveal years ago we took our 3 teenagers to London for 10 days and we were occupied the whole time.
We spent a whole day going to Windsor Castle by train, seeing the castle and having lunch at a pub. You can also go to Greenwich by boat and spend most of the day there. The same for Hampton Court.
Evan Evans and other tour companies can take on day trips to Stonehenge and Bath, Canterbury and Leeds castle etc.

We have 5 days in London prior to our tour and as this is our third visit to London I have been looking at 'different' things to do. Last night I found a web site www.walks.com and they have some great walks with a guide both in and out of London for very reasonable prices. I emailed them and they replied straight back. There is no need to book as you just meet with the group at the given location for the trip and pay the tour guide. This all looks fine to me but if there is anyone out there who have used this service would love to hear from you. It is certainly worth looking at as, even if you don't want to go with a guide, there are some great ideas on their summer brochure.

We went on two of the London Walks last August and they are great. They are very interesting and we look forward to going back to London and doing some more. The only problem is choice as they have a lot of them.

Thanks GeorgeJ. It's always great when someone can verify something for you. I like the sound of the day trip to Oxford and the Cotswolds and the idea of the train trip appeals to us as that is a form of transport we rarely get to use. There are so many to choose from but it is great not having to book as we can just see what we want to do on the day - and what the weather dictates Cool
