Are the Crowne Plaza St.Peters and the Sheraton Roma within walking distance of any of the Rome sites such as The Vatican, Spanish Steps , Petheon, etc.?

I don't know about the Crowne Plaza, but the Sheraton is definitely not within walking distance of any historical sights. It is several miles (if memory serves) outside the old city wall.

Happy Trails!!

I have not stayed at either hotels but I do recall looking them for a previous trip to Rome. From reading reviews, both hotels are rated favourably but not very convenient. Shuttle service to downtown Rome is provided by both hotels. It is complimentary at Crowne Plaza but 5 EUR at Sheraton Roma.

If location is important and assuming it's in the historic centre, you may want to consider the following hotels:

George,

these hotels are classified by Insight on their tour maps as "gateway" hotels and have been chosen in your itinerary to be proximal to the following day's activities. The Crowne Plaza St Peters is close to the Vatican which you will visit first thing on day 2. You will stay at the Sheraton Roma on your last night, on return from Naples. This hotel is reasonably close to the airport where most travellers will be going on the following morning.

If you have some spare time at the start of your tour, take a transfer (or a cab) across the river to somewhere like Piazza Navona and walk from there to the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc. When you've spent many thousands of dollars for your holiday, don't even think for a moment about €5-10 for a cab.

Hello,
Phil is correct - we sometimes use hotels because of their convenience for arriving and departing Guests and note them as 'gateway' in the brochure.
Both the Sheraton and Crowne Plaze St. Peter's are very comfortable modern style hotels and both have good shuttle systems to get into town although the tour coach will be transporting you anyway most of the time.
Just as a thought, somewhere I have visited myself when staying at the Sheraton is the Museum of Roman Civilization in the district of EUR, which is very close by the hotel. EUR district was the 'new Rome' built by Mussolini to show off his modern Italy and contains huge monumental civic buildings designed to impress the world at that time. Whilst the area in isteself rarely gets a major mention on tours because it registers quite low on the general scale of a historic Rome timeline, the museum contains a large scale model of Ancient Rome set in the time of Constantine. It is a sight to behold and images of this are used in many guidebooks to show how things were in the past! Special walkways take you above the model and one can get a very good perspective of just how grand the original city was at the height of the empire. If you are staying on an extra day and have perhaps been to Rome before then it may be worth a visit.
