My husband and I are planning to go on the Country Roads of France tour (this will be our 3rd tour with Insight) Sept 2010.
Does anyone out there have an opinion on combining Versailles and Giverny with this tour? Is it better to book with Insight as an extra, line up a tour once you are in Paris or go it alone on the trains? Do you get enough time if you use a tour? How much time do you comfortably need at these sites?

When I did this tour in 2006, our TD arranged for our Giverney excursion to be early on a Saturday morning [the last day of the tour] so we had the place to ourselves for a while - Giverney is one of my favourite memories from this tour. We certainly had enough time at the site to wander at our leisure.

As for Versailles, there wasn't any time during the tour to see it. We stayed in Paris for a few days after the tour ended and arranged a trip to Versailles through our hotel. There was extensive restoration under way in 2006 when I was there, so access to parts of the palace was restricted. You need a day there to really see everything -

Country Roads of France is a wonderful tour - enjoy!

Hi Tully,
Thanks for your info. I see that Giverny is still offered as an extra and it looks to be a good value (and you don't have to deal with the train schedules).

Did you have enough time at Versailles with a trip arranged through your hotel? I have been looking into prebooking through other travel companies but they are asking $180-190 Cdn pp and that is for 4 hours including travel time. I couldn't find a price from Insight.

Has anyone gone out to Versailles using the trains and a Museum Pass?

I saw the Palace of Versailles on my European Explorer tour, it was an optional offered by Insight. The Palace is enormous, we did not have anywhere near enough time to see everything. The gardens are magnificent, you could easily spend the whole time exploring and enjoying the beauty of these. The palace itself, or the parts you are allowed to see is just splendid. Out of all the royal palaces I have seen this one is by far the most beautiful. I am in Paris again this year and plan to take a day out myself to view the palace at a more relaxed pace.
