I am going on the above trip in May 2006. What will the weather be like around May 19-June 3?
Does this trip cover good areas of Italy? Is the hotel in Florence good? It is the Sheraton, but some reviews didn't look too good. Is this trip nicely paced with leisure time? I am looking forward to Sorrento & Amalfi coast region, are the views great? Any info about this trip, will be greatly appreciated. |

Bren,
We just got back from this tour (Oct 7 - 23). It was an incredible experience. To answer your questions: Does it cover good areas of Italy? The quick answer is yes. You really get a chance to see the difference in the landscape and the different regions. Is the hotel in Florence good? In my opinion it was fine. We were at the Sheraton. It is a large hotel so it was a walk to get from our room to the elevator/stairs. Our room was what I would call a normal size hotel room. We had plenty of room and the bathroom was good sized. Over all we had good experiences at the hotels. Is this trip nicely paced with leisure time? I would say yes. We went on every optional, and still had free time to do some of our own exploring. Loved the fact that we had a whole day to explore Venice. Sorrento & Amalfi coast region, are the views great? Yes. We did the Amalfi coast in the morning and it was beautiful. We did have haze so we couldn't see the other islands. But since it was clear and sunny we got great pictures of the coast line. We went down into Positano which is a great town, just be prepared because it is all down hill and then you get to walk back up. Be sure to try the Lemoncello, my husband loved it. I am working on my journal and will be posting it under "Tour Tales" when I finish. I will put some of our pics out too. Overall Comments: We had Debra as our Tour Director. You will be so lucky if you get her. She is incredible and her knowledge and love of Italy made our trip. We did every optional (I will detail them in my journal) and were glad that we did them. Be prepared to walk everywhere, and most of the time it is uphill. Debra warned us the first night, we would get buns of steel. She wasn't kidding. They aren't joking when they say "hill top" towns. |

This is a repost of my reply to Bren's similar question in the photgraphy just in case it was missed....
Bren, I can give you the following feedback from our tour earlier this year. 1) Generally the Country Roads tours are the more expensive Insight tours but you need to think about budgeting for optionals on top of the tour price. It varies from tour to tour which optionals are run. On our tour if we had done all the 13 available optionals it would have cost 546 Euros per person. I'm not suggesting you don't do the optionals.... we have no regrets about the 10 optionals we decided to do... just be aware of it. 2) The dinner optionals especially the 1) Delights of the Bay of Naples & Farm dinner & 2) the Pisa/Lucca & Wine Tasting & Vineyards Farm House Dinner (I think our Guide combined two tours together) were some of the best food we had while in Italy 3) The tour does visit a number of Italian hill top villages and usually the tour bus can only drive only so far up into the village. So take into account it is unavoidable that there is some up and then down hill walking if you want to see the main areas of interest. We only had two people on the tour who struggled with this but I think they had very dodgey knees and/or hips. Also with much of this walking being over uneven cobblestones think about the footwear you take. This tour was a great introduction to the different facets to Italy; beautiful countryside, the quaint hilltop villages, some beautiful old churches, major cities and major tourist attractions, some history, art and last but not least food. What more could you ask for! Hopefully that was the type of information you were after but if not just please ask. JoP |

The Sheraton in Florence has a shuttle bus service to the city centre. If using this after free time to return to the hotel from the railway station you need to make sure you check where the pick up point at the station is,as it was in the middle of a car park on the right hand side (facing the station) when we finally located it! The bus parking area, however, is on the front left of the station. The Sheraton was ok as far as we were concerned.

Here is a link (thanks to Phil) of my Country Roads of Italy journal:
http://forums.insightvacations.com/eve/forums?a=tpc...64110241&m=718103672 That tour was taken in 2001. Since then, Insight has made many changes to the tour, to improve and enhance the tour even more. That tour has been our all-time favorite. If you wish to have the journal emailed, write to me at: LMarvinB(at)Yahoo.com Of course, replace the "(at)" with the "@" symbol. --Marv |
