My husband & I are going on the June 20th, 2009 tour. I have a question. When the tour stops in Grasmere - do we stop anywhre near to the place where they sell the famus gingerbread? Heard so much about it I just have to get me some. Yum.

Hi,
If you manage to get out of the Lake District without spotting the ' gingerbread man ' you will have established a world record. Enjoy your trip. Roger |

Your tour director will, almost without doubt, show you where the shop is. That's been my experience on tours stopping at Grasmere. To be perfectly honest with you though (and I hope I'm not shattering any illusions |

Please let me know what you thought about the Gingerbread when you get back. Most of the people of our tour last year did not like it at all. Maybe it was that we were just about all Australian and we may have had different ideas on what Gingerbread should taste like. I feed mine to the ducks.

Hi:
My son and I are going on the GB/Ireland explorer tour that leaves on 7/11. I was wondering how much money and traveler's checks that I should buy? Is it easy to use american express and credit cards there? |

Travellers' cheques aren't a great idea these days. They do provide security but can be very difficult to cash and cannot be used as currency. I'm not sure about American Express as most places take either Visa or Mastercard. ATMs are very popular but you need to check pin numbers with your bank as the machines use 4 digit ones.

Hi,
Harrods and American owned Hotels in major cities 'probably' take American Express but most ordinary places like shops, pubs and food outlets that you may visit on tour will not. As stated previously there are no problems using Visa or Mastercard credit cards. Enjoy your trip .... Roger |

I only take my Mastercard and Visa Debit. I withdraw cash as I go. There are ATM's everywhere. (Even at an 11th Century village in Tuscany believe it or not!!)

Our tour stopped in Grasmere and people bought the gingerbread. I didn't understand what the big deal was until several days later when I tasted some of their purchase. Too late! Missed the boat/bus!
I've been trying to replicate it without luck. If you like ginger, I would advise you to try it. It's more like an oatmeal ginger cookie than the gingerbread we have in Canada. Enjoy!! |
