I found the following posts that have info about Sicily and Malta. Perhaps something there will help you.

Hi Folly

We did the Sicily and Malta tour in September 2009. As with all Insight tours there was a full agenda and we had our usual good time. The food in Sicily was marvellous, quite different from mainland Italy. We usually do all the optionals as we have found there are quite a few gems you could otherwise miss.

Mount Etna is a must, as is the mountain village of Taormina. Malta was the highlight, totally different from Sicily. We could have spent more time there. They even speak English! We would recommend leaving the tour one day early and spending an extra day or two in Malta. Flying home, or onward, from Valletta would save you a 4:30 am wake-up call to catch the 7:00am ferry back to Sicily. Not much to see in Sicily after this. Make sure you have a British electric plug converter (for Malta).

Hi Folley,
I did this tour at the end of '08 and fully support the statements already made. Had visited Sicily on a Grand Tour of Italy and Sicily in '03, but the extra time spent in Sicily was well worth re-visiting the few sights that I had previously seen, and anyway, they were worth seeing a second time. Again, the Malta part of the trip was for me the highlight, it is difficult to say just why that is so, but it was truly memorable. If you have any doubts about this trip, my advice is put them behind you and GO!
Cheers
JJA

We loved Malta when we were then on a Med. cruise. They have man made structures that predate the pyramids, and also rocks carved in a manner similar to the ancient ones in NZ and Oz.

Malta remains, I believe, the only country in the world whose population has been awarded a medal for heroism.

King George VI awarded the George Cross to the population on the 15th April 1942 in recognition of their heroism during the siege.

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

I didn't know that, Tangata. A British relative was killed there in 1942, he was in the navy and is buried in Malta.
My father lives there in winter finds the climate much better than the cold Canadian winter. I spent about 10 days there and found the history interesting. I did visit the tourist sites but never heard anything about WW2 history, although I have read some of it. The main tourist attractions emphasize the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, with quite a lot of gory detail.
Most people speak English, but I found their language interesting and place names hard to pronounce.

I have been interested in this trip since I want to visit Sicily and also go back to Malta. I nearly did it in September but my father was in England during the tours available. I hope they still have this tour next year.

Malta was indeed awarded the George Cross by King George VI, and in fact the Maltese Flag is half red and half white with the George Cross in the upper section close to the flag pole.
