I am interested in taking an Italy tour in June 2010. I had zeroed in on Best of Italy but I am concerned that there is not enough time in Florence. Anything similar recommended that would give me more time in this city? Also looking at Italian Escapade but it is more $$.

Hi, there! I was on the Best of Italy two years ago. You really cover a lot of territory in this tour. There is not enough time in any of the places. I did not get enough of Venice and Florence. If I knew then what I know now, I would have done the Easy Pace Italy, since these places are mainly my favorites in Italy and staying for three nights in each city enables you to savor the city a bit more and to have a more choices on the activities and the pace you want to take. Unfortunately, it cost more simply because you get three more days.

Good luck shopping for your tour. You will enjoy it.

This is a difficult one. After comparing the two, the only difference seems to be on the Best of Italy (BOI) you stay in Montecatini and visit Florence on Italian Escapade (IE) you stay in Florence. The description of your day on BOI actually reads better than the IE.

On the other hand if you select the IE you don't have to go back to the hotel with the tour but can stay in the city and do more sightseeing and find your own way back to the hotel. As I wrote it's not an easy decision to make - obviously, a lot depends on your budget as the IE does cost more.

I suppose it boils down to which tour covers what you want to see most. Whichever you choose be assured you will have a wonderful time and will have a professional and friendly Tour Guide to help and advise you.

Happy travelling.

We are going on the "Easy Pace" Italy tour on October 4. We chose this tour exactly for the reasons you cite. We will spend 3 nights each in Venice, Florence and Rome. We are also extending our trip another 2 weeks and renting a car from Rome to tour Tuscany and will end up turning in the car and spending the last 4 days in Florence. Expensive, yes! But this is a trip of a lifetime and don't think we'll be able to return to Italy. Getting pretty excited as we get close! Hope you are happy with whatever choice you make - they all sound wonderful.

I have done a whirlwind tour of Europe which covered the big 3 in Italy. However, it will be the first visit to Italy for my husband and children. I wanted to add an area I had not visited and the Amalfi coast seems more appealing to me than the Lakes region up north. Any opinions on deciding between the Lakes region and the Amalfi coast?

Hi Singermom4, I went on the a Trafalgar Best of Italy tour for 13 days. It was absolutely fantastic. We saw the Amalfi coast and Positano (an optional extra) and this tour went to Lake Como and Lugano, both beautiful.

It is hard to decide, but if you want a lot of time in Florence, which I loved too, then a tour like you are thinking of, may not give you the time you want. However, I will say that on my tour (which stayed in Florence) we had the afternoon on the day of arrival to do a walking tour and then the whole next day was spent in Florence.

Good luck with your decision Smiler

I am starting to consider the longer tours but am quite sure my husband will balk over the extra days (more of an issue with time rather than money). I am still undecided as to whether to go with Insight or Trafalgar. Seems there have altogether been more concerns over poor tour directors with Trafalgar.

I did the Italian Escapade in May/June 2001 (Northern Italy) and CR of Southern Italy & Sicily in October 2007. Both of those tours covered the Amalfi Coast but not Florence. Maybe the tour Langers did will be more suitable.
I always choose my tours based on itinerary, not tour companies. Most TD's are great, no matter what company you tour with (my personal thoughts) Some are just better than others. My first Insight TD was not that crash hot BUT that didn't turn me away from the company and their itineries.

If you want to see more of Florence, be sure to stay in Florence, not Montecatini. I've been fortunate to stay in the Grand Mediterraneo twice, a perfect location right on the Arno, easy walking to whatever I wanted to see.
Ciao

The Italian Escapade and G****s tour's Italian Mosaic are very similar - main difference is the Mosaic tour stays in Capri rather than Sorrento. Also the price is about $800 less for the Mosaic tour. I'm liking what I am hearing about Insight tours but I am having a hard time justifying the price difference. It's interesting that their 10 day tours are priced similarly but Insight's price seems to jump alot from Best of Italy to Italian Escapade.
